The donut spare should never be used for speeds over 50 mph. In 33 years as an leo i never seen or heard of a deer crash resulting in a fatal in Florida. I agree it is a hazard and you should reduce speeds at night to increase your reaction distance. For every mph, your vehicle is traveling at a velocity of approximately 1.5 feet per second (1,66fps actually) At 70mph that is app 105 feet per second. Slow down at night and at sunset when wildlife are more active.

Buy deer horns for your car…they work…Auto Parts store sells them. Mount them in your front grill. Very small and inexpensive. Have not hit one since I put on my car. Used to hit them several times a year. Never swerved once.

REGARDING:
"People have been killed by hitting the deer!"

This is true. It DOES happen. It happens more often hitting a large object anchored in the ground.

A total of 7,253 people died in fixed-object crashes in 2019, 185 deaths initiated by hitting deer. 40.2 times as many died not hitting deer. Not that they were dodging deer necessarily, but based on the number of dead deer along US 29 and the low number of humans who died in the process....

https://www.iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics/detail/collisions-with-fixed-objects-and-animals

Meanwhile, it's good this one survived this incident.

@Judy, swerving to avoid an animal at typical country road speeds is a challenge for the average driver, especially if at night with the shorter distances and time available. Encountering a deer of the size needed to have the occupant killed by the engine ending up in the passenger compartment is likely a very unusual occurrence. Moose, or elk perhaps, but not a deer. My semi-educated guess is that it is better to hit the animal straight on if one is unable to stop in time. Swerving all too often ends up like it did above, and that is if one doesn't involve any other traffic.

People have been killed by hitting the deer! I know of at least 2 incidents where people dies because the deer was so large it crushed the motor into the cabin of the car! Not to mention one that was killed because he was impaled by the antlers! I have driven my woods for a lot of years, and a smart person will try to avoid the deer!!!
