I am shocked and sickened to my stomach as I read the substitute teacher pay in this article. I understand very well that the cost of living has a direct connection to the area’s pay, but still, the pay for substitute teachers there is just way too low (especially those with college degrees). To say that the pay is insulting to substitute teachers is an understatement…it’s downright criminal!!!

In Santa Rosa County, we get $10.97 a hour. Guess we subs are crazy or just love the kiddos. It is a little disheartening.

Sure do hope they raise the pay in Santa Rosa County for subs…..so sad that they haven’t yet….especially as much as they are needed right now. If they don’t then subs will probably start going to Escambia and Okaloosa instead where they can make decent pay for the hard work they do.

plus they have to go and pay out of their own pocket $100 to get themselves finger printed. The county should cover that.

Florida minimum wage is 15.00hr right?
15×8hr=120.00, McDonald’s pays this?
College degree sub gets 100.00?

Don’t forget, this is the best, higher wage, which is still extremely low. Before the pandemic, I subbed and could see that teachers were absolutely desperate for subs. Now, they are even more desperate. Teachers have to put off medical appointments because they can’t find a sub. There are five school board members. They were pressured for years to raise this wage and the bus driver wage and they refused. Staff is really at a breaking point and they finally raised both slightly. Keep pressuring the five school board members. They are failing you. And District 5 board member Mr. Slaydon already commented on here a few months ago that he didn’t care.

@Betty Killam you sound ridiculous. No matter if it is part time or full time, it is sitll YOUR time. You should be paid a fair wage for your time. A college graduated being paid $10 an hour is not even a start. Teaching is an honorable profession. Pay these teachers and substitute teachers an honest wage! $30 twenty years ago wasn’t good money back then either. Stop expecting people to accept pennies, just because you would.

As it was stated, right now the subs are keeping the schools running. With Covid keeping a lot of the teachers out, either for themselves or with their children, they are basically getting hazard pay. Also, the administration is teaching in some schools right now as well. This is a time like no other.

It’s not a “part time job” when you’re getting calls literally EVERY day to sub. They are desperate. The schools tell you they are desperate. $30 in the 90s is much different that $30 in 2021.
