Since we don’t know the nature of the “practical joke,” we don’t know it would have been acceptable even in your family.

His response certainly SEEMS extreme, but it would depend on the details. “Practical jokes” have been known to kill, blind, maim, destroy treasured possessions. I suspect those were not done in your family.

We also don’t know if anything said against him is true, Maybe none of it actually happened; people lie.
