@Jim C– I must disagree. In the recovery of abused animals, usually there are Law Enforcement officers with Animal Control. As for the large animals, my husband is in the woods along our rivers every weekend and sometimes during the week after work. He’s lived here his entire life and could survive without supermarkets or the internet. Not once has he seen a black bear although yes, they are here, albeit scarcely. Hogs aren’t coming into urban areas. The hogs that do invade residential areas are dispatched by rural residents. Besides that, Animal Control wouldn’t come anyway. They’d tell you to call FWC 100% of the time.

@Tela O— I do know a long time Escambia County Animal Control employee very well and can say I can make a a stronger argument against why they should have firearms. In most dangerous situations, there is a law enforcement officer present. Otherwise, their doing the same job they’ve always done.

Tabby, If you’ve never been an Animal Control Officer, you wouldn’t understand the risk they are put in everyday. They go to the same houses as every Police Officer…without backup. They work by themselves. They are telling those same people that they “might take their animals”. They are constantly put in the middle of “attack dog” situations, rather it’s assisting PD on search warrants or handling their own investigations. The danger of the job is insane. An Animal Control Officer was just shot this week, but the city it happened to list the title “Two police officers and a civilian shot” then later changes the “civilian” to “a city employee” in their narrative because nobody cares enough to call them an officer. If they go through the proper training, they have every right and need to carry a firearm.

Some of them are Guinea Hens, they are often used as watchdogs for other fowl, as they are very aggressive.

@Tabby – Multiple reasons: Occasionally, animal control is involved in recovery of abused and neglected animals, among other duties. Those animals’ owners can and do become aggressive and threatening.
When dealing with large wild animals (we have black bears, hogs, coyotes, as well as feral.dog packs, in Escambia County. Rabid/aggressive animals present a clear danger to Animal Control personnel.
Last, but clearly not last, these folks are Law Enforcement Officers, not the “dog catchers” of the old Little Rascals shorts.
