…the highways and intersections are not the problem..the problem is impaired driver , distracted drivers , careless and
st upid drivers …people in too much of hurry because they don’t plan ahead and leave late for appointments..and tailgaters..

Install a signal, make it 6 lane and 45mph from just north of 97 all the way to town. I guarantee you it will be safer. You may go slower, but with 6 lanes it’ll flow more consistent if they’re timed right.

This intersection is a complete design disaster! Someone start a petition to DOT before more people die! There is no acceleration lane for those turning off east Hwy 196 onto Hwy 29 headed south.

Can someone please explain why there is two turning lanes if you are traveling North on Highway 29 and want to turn onto Hwy 196 going West?
I have never been able to figure this out. Very Very bad design. I know of no other area in Pensacola that has two turn lanes like this.

So sorry this accident happened and it is exactly what it was (more than likely), an accident. Not trying to sound heartless, but it happens. Hope the people involved are going to be better than o.k.
Hope they all had insurance.
This isn’t or maybe is the time to say this…
Note, there are turning lanes off of hwy 29 north and south going onto hwy 196 (barrineau park rd.) from the median. Not sure if there is a lane on hwy 29 to get into when turning off of barrineau park rd. from the west side (there is not from the east) so that u can speed up before the transition into flowing traffic going south.
Also, Part of 29 in that area is posted, if I remember correctly, 65 mph the other is 55. Not many people drive 55 or 65 in that area…it’s more like 70/75 (85). Not dropping any blame here in any way shape or form, just saying. And, I have seen, and have had, people pull out in front of others and people pull out in front of me…not dropping blame here in any way shape or form, just saying.
This article says she was leaving 196 and pulled onto 29. The car looks mashed on the passenger side (can’t see the driver side). But if this is the case, the only way the car could have been hit on the passenger side would be if it was in the median already, getting ready to pull out onto 29 going south (from the east) or getting ready to pull out onto 29 going north (from the west). Wish I new if the car was hit by another vehicle or not since we can’t see the driver side.
In my opinion, lights can help but they can cause other problems as well…but, maybe lesser problems instead of accidents.
Next, Joy Bryant in the below post is right…people out here don’t know their place in the median. And I am not just talking about civilians…I have seen police and county officers doing it as well. Not sure how to correct it but this has to stop. Maybe they don’t teach it in drivers ed?! Haven’t had to read a drivers license book in a long, long time. Maybe it isn’t in the book any more?!
Last of my comments…Also note that when going south on hwy 29 and then getting into the median before getting onto barrineau park rd. going east u just about have to stop in the wrong place to turn left or you are having to cross back to the north east just to turn onto barrineau rd. Bad, bad, bad design!
Hope I didn’t write all of this for nothing and all the issues get fixed!

Haven’t seen Highway Patrol working this area. Don’t have yellow lights for caution. Just Red & Green. But that will not work either. Fault is always in the driver but a lot of money can change the result for the driver. No matter what is done, it’s always money for the State.
