So this guy is serving a three-year sentence out of Hillsborough County for aggravated assault with a weapon, and some of you want to blame the Officer.

As a family member of a correctional officer I know there are good and bad in all jobs, but the men and women that walk through that gate onto that compound put their lives on the line everyday. So while y’all are on here talking about how bad they are why don’t you put your money where your mouth is and get a job with the Department of Corrections. I think these officers need a huge thank you for duing their job cause somebody’s got to.

It could be a pleasant three year stretch or it could be hell on earth.

A fear of the CO is not the beginning, it is the installation of that fear that is the beginning of good discipline and order in the prison.

Yes I agree there are good and evil at any job, but the men and women who have chosen this line of work I say a job well done. To all of the negative commits on hear I think you should put your money where your mouth is and go to work for the Department of Corrections. The men and women put their lives on the line everyday when they walk onto that compound. So again I say a job well done and thank you.

I’m in no way saying this CO is at fault. He is probably a good guy and was just standing at the chow hall door and the inmate walked up and headbutted him… but that’s not usually how it happens.

Just like there are bad police, there are bad CO’s… except it’s a lot easier to get by with it. Other CO’s don’t rat, it’s a closed environment away from the public, no videoing, no one to report an incident to, and they don’t get fired even if they are written up twenty times because they are always short on staff. So yeah, often when an inmate attacks a CO it’s from something the cop initiated and could have been avoided with a little better training and oversight. I will say that most of the CO’s are respectful and decent and go their whole career without ever getting into a 1 on 1 fight with an inmate, but others end up having to have an incident or two before they realize being a bully is not productive.

I disagree with some of the statements – inmates get angry for things that are out of the officer’s control. They take it out on the officer in front of them. I am not saying that there are not bad officers. There will always be “bad” in any job. There are some inmates that are angry at the world because they are locked up. The inmates are there because they were not “nice” outside of the prison. Yes, they still need to be treated with respect. They also need to give respect. Somehow, I never hear that the inmates need to give respect, obey orders, be quiet when told to be quiet, put their hands out the flaps when it’s required, stop trying to hurt officers and other inmates.

@ Jason. Totally agree. I’ve been incarcerated at okaloosa , lake butler, and century . Seen first hand the officers do. Snatching a wheel chair from an inmate because his pass was outdated. Beating up the jits at lake butler. Eating for free at the staff kitchen when supposed to be paying. Lying saying Inmate hit an officer , never happened. Intentionally getting inmate in confinement riled up so they could spray them. . But I will say to all the good officers that are professional, keep your head up and don’t let the bad apples influence you. You are needed greatly .

I think there should be more study to try and keep officers and inmates separated. An officer should not be put in a position to be assaulted. More bars between them and/or cables, like dog runs, to attach the inmates to.

Instead of downing the Ofc. Why don’t you try dealing with these Inmates high on spice etc. on a daily basis. All professions have bad apples but don’t judge everyone by the bad apples.

Nobody who has only read this blurb has any idea what actually happened but there are certain things we do know. One person was convicted and is serving time for a violent crime. The other has a job that demands you have a clean record. One person is a drain on society and the other is contributing to society. I’m not claiming I’m in a position to judge but it’s obvious who has earned the benefit of the doubt and who hasn’t.

Shame on anyone who bad mouths a corrections officer or the profession as a response to learning that one was a victim of a violent assault by a convicted criminal.

That’s a pathetic and indefensible position.
