William Reynolds, I tried years ago to keep them from raising the speed limit on 29. The DOT told me most people were going 65 anyway. Well duh, if they are going 65 in a 55 mph zone, let’s see, they’ll go 75, or more, in a 65 mph zone, on a divided highway with many access roads, driveways, and school bus stops.

I am so glad nobody was hurt or killed in that accident. Looking at those cars, it is a miracle. It was foggy that day, and even if everybody had their light on and was paying attention, accidents in heavy fog are not unusual. Thank God for NO INJURIES!

Why is it you never see a state trooper 0n 97 unless there is an accident. Deputies were good in the school zones for awhile,but you don’t see much of them anymore.

I don’t live or drive 29 or 97 but this has to be the worst road for wrecks in NW Florida. I agree its the drivers not the roads. They need to start writing more tickets and generate some income while it would cut down on accidents. Win, Win, exept for the “road rules don’t apply to me” group.

And that light was supposed to solve all the wrecks at that intersection….waste of
taxpayer money which resulted in parking lot in middle of a highway.

This is a PEOPLE problem. Not a speed limit, red light, roadway issue
PEOPLE on their phones
PEOPLE speeding
PEOPLE aggressive
PEOPLE careless
PEOPLE distracted
PEOPLE thinking not driving defensively
PEOPLE operating vehicles they have no business operating.

if you’re approaching a red light leave a good bit of space
between you and vehicles in front. then pay close attention
to anything coming up behind and begin tapping your brakes
to help the approaching vehicle see there’s an issue ahead of
them ! driving is a privilege not a so-called “right” . inattentive
drivers have become the‘ “norm”…unfortunately , it can be deadly .

All the lights in the world and all the lowered speed limits will not stop people from driving dangerously. This accident like most could have been prevented had the person been paying attention to the road, and the weather conditions. Speed limits are set for ideal conditions. When ones vision is impaired due to heavy rain or fog you should slow down. The driver of the truck admitted to traveling faster than his field of view would allow him to stop in.
My concern is what if this had been a school bus stopped for loading or unloading? Highway 29 needs to be a controlled access highway with no traffic lights and no bus stops. Instead of traffic lights we need merging and turning lanes.

Highway 29 is a state/federal highway. Your county commissioner can’t change the speed limit on hwy 29
