ShandsCair has the priority contract now over LifeFlight. ShandsCair dispatch is contacted first and they determine if they have a aircraft close enough to respond and ,if not, LifeFlight is contacted. Typically ShandsCair responds to calls in the North end of the county due to the proximity of aircraft in Atmore and Semmes. LifeFlight will usually respond to areas in the Southern end of the county ie. Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, and Beulah.

Citizens who were not here 50 years plus ago do not realize the advancements in responses to any type of highway or home emergency. There were private ambulance services, but most counties relied on funeral homes using retired hearses as emergency vehicles. The ambulance attendants and law enforcement officers could only render rudimentary first aid before a hopefully safe trip to the hospital.

There were no modular ambulances with immediate contact with emergency rooms, and airborne rescue was unheard of. Even the fire departments could offer only scant aid.

With the involvement in Vietnam came the era of the EMT, paramedic and helicopter rescue. Volunteer fire departments have trained medics ready to render aid. Times have truly improved for bad situations.

LifeFlight, Shandscair and MedStar all respond in Escambia County now. (MedStar Air Care 2 based in Atmore seems to typically only respond in the northern end of Escambia County FL )

Oh my god, I was on my porch when I seen all the ambulances, police cars, everything. Praying for those involved this is horrible, God bless.

God bless you! Praying for family and teens. Please be careful on the roads going to school and out with friends! Lost my son in Auto accident. Hoping doctors help her and God puts his hand on her and family.
