Sidewalks would make a huge difference because not everyone is hit crossing the street.

I’m disgusted that people who enjoy the luxury of moving in machines, encased in metal with the inside temperature artificially cooled, moving at speeds many times faster than the quickest pedestrian -even with all that to the driver’s advantage - they still have the audacity to say a defenseless pedestrian, moving at maybe 2-3 mph should be watching out for THEM. Walking causes no danger to the community. Drivers put lives at risk every time they start their vehicles.

It's really frustrating to me to see people walking in dark clothing. I have also noticed a great increase in motorized bicycles on the road, neither mixing with cars nor off the rosd. I expect there will be increased deaths involving them.

Two days ago during the middle of the day, I witnessed two pedestrians almost get hit! One older lady on Mobile Hwy across from Wal-Mart walked right out into the road as I approached. She was not in a cross walk & I was glad I saw her from a distance & was keeping an eye on her, however, the truck approaching in the lane next to mine had to stop suddenly to avoid her. She kept on walking, seemingly oblivious to the fact that she almost got hit! Later in the day I witnessed one of the homeless people who congregate under the Fairfield Dr/I-110 overpass walk right out into the path of an oncoming car! He walked out with his middle finger in the air as an older couple in a car was approaching. They had to stop suddenly to avoid him. He was making his way to the concrete median to beg for money. I wish the city & county would do something about all of the beggars on every corner! And yes, I’ve given them food but refuse to offer money which will most likely be used for drugs & alcohol.

Lack of crosswalks and aids is not the problem. The problem is lack of respect. Many today do not respect laws, authority or any form of control. Crosswalks are there for the safety and protection of pedestrians and so drivers know where walkers may likely be. Jay walking is a crime, when citations and fines start regularly being applied, more will use the cross walks. Until it’s more “painful” to not use the cross walks, people will continue to cross where ever they feel like it. Six lanes of rush hour traffic and someone steps out between two stopped cars right into the path of a car in the next lane that is not stopped. Pedestrians are not waiting for red lights, nor walking the extra 20 ft to the marked and signal controlled crosswalk. New laws or cross walks won’t fix the issue. There are laws on the books and a lot of unused crosswalks already.

Yes it is very sad it happened that someone was killed due to being struck by a car
Shari- even if they did install more crosswalks for pedestrians majority of the people still wouldn’t use them. I have seen very many times people do not use them when they are only 10-50 feet away they just believe they can cross right there. So pedestrian crosswalks are not the problem.

Shari wood.

Sidewalks would indicate they are on the side of the road not perpendicular.

I go to work before daylight and see people walking at that time of the morning
and most of them are wearing black or dark clothing. It is hard to see them until
you are right up to them sometime.
