Grover, As a native Escambian, and Aggie, I enjoyed the trips to Pensacola I was excited to pass Lee square and the San Carlos hotel. I knew I was in Pensacola . I was proud to see the Confederate flag flying, not because of prejudice but because I am proud to be a Southerner. The history is there and will always be there and you can't erase history. Tearing down building,renaming bridges, removing statues will not erase history. If you want to tear down statues there is a black hero that will have a statue and a bridge in honor of him. Everybody should read the autobiography of Chappie James 1st black General and a 4 star General upon his death. I am not opposed to the statues or the honoring of this great man. However, to build one statue honoring a great man of the past and tear down the statues and rename bridges honoring Civil War hero's is wrong.
What's to prevent 50 years from now a new group to come in and tear down Chappie James statue? Remember history, Black Tribal Chiefs would sell Africans for trinkets and blankets due to no monetary system in Africa. They sold their own people to the stave traders much as the west did to the Indian when they first moved in.
It is 2020 many decades have past during the Slave Trade Industry. This society is not responsible for the actions of the Slave Trade Period. Nor do I owe any compensation to today's Black Lives Matter Group. They need to earn money the way I do "Work for it".
Twenty-three years in the United States Air force, being shot in Thailand, I served with good black military members being supervised by them. And supervising young black men myself, I enjoyed working with each one of them.
After the AF, I drove motor coach across the US. I was fortunate enough to meet one of the last remaining Tuskegee Airmen. Remember the Tuskegee Airmen, they were an all black squadron of fighters, protecting the bomber planes taken into Germany. They were the only squadron of P51 fighters (all Black). They never lost one pilot. They trained in Tuskegee Al. America owes a great debt to these great Americans. Despite their being discriminated against, they helped to make America great.
I am not prejudice. But, tearing down these statues and taking Confederate soldiers names off of things is not going to change history. It will always be there. However, it is destroying my heritage and causing me resentment against " Black Lives Matter". Remember the South was made up of Democrats who were Christian,God fearing, slave holders who more than society will say took care of their slaves. Right or wrong.
                                                        Thank you, Signed........
                                                                         A Proud Southerner

I guess the Wall South will be torn down next. It may offend someone. Could Lee Square be sold to private citizens so we can protect it.

Judge Bergosh granted the emergency order. My great-great grandfather fought for the North and was shot and held prisoner by the South in Mississippi. But I support the rights of this county's citizens to be included in decisions to keep their monuments and have no support for council members who violate federal, state, count and city ordinances and statutes. This is a civil comment but will probably be blocked because it is.

It's just a statue. Worry more about whether not wearing a mask is going to kill someone you love.

@Rodney Lindsey

Where did you go to school. You did not attend school or slept through English glass.
The fighter jets on display offend me also. They denote death and carnage but I know they will never be removed. When I see one I make myself think of rainbows and sunshine. Maybe people with hate in their heart should try this exercise when they think of Pensacola's history.

Down with Galvez! He was a slave owner! Also a Conquistador! Take down all flags, because all were involved in the slave trade! Yes, Spain, France, and England were all slave traders; even before America! Pensacola should be city of no flags! Spain, France, and England should all pay reparations! Even to America, because they are the roots! Down With Galvez, Now!

Boycott Pensacola...the Chamber of Commerce came out in support of this foolishness. I can’t recommend spending my hard earned $$$ in a town that it’s very
Own COC stokes racial divisions by supporting this non-sense. Pensacola is a less friendly city to do business in after this because the people should have been given a say in the form of a referendum. The same big box stores are on the Eastern Shore and they will be getting my tax dollars from this point forward. A local business who usually spends a $1000+ a month at a Pensacola business told me he bought the same products at Sams in Baldwin County today because he was no longer spending his money in a city that offends his heritage....way to go mayor, council and chamber.

Grover, I never thought you would throw the people of Pensacola under the bus. I am 72 years old. I always looked at Lee Square as I came down Palafox especially when the spring flowers were in bloom. I will never forget the young Naval Officer in his dress whites on one knee asking his girl friend to marry him. I said yes!!. I have to stop writing now. I can not see through my tears. I have never and never will be a racist. But I love the history of this town .
