Unless we get this virus under control, students will not return to school. Some states have already changed plans and will continue with distance learning until after the first of the year. Wear masks or just keep going like we are.

CONTEMPLATING:
" wrap your self in plastic wrap in a closet and lock the door behind you"

Wouldn't that result in asphyxiation?

David for delaying mortality, not accelerating it

I would hope most parents at the middle school and high school will choose the remote option but I don't think that will happen. It is scary for teachers with many of them over the age of 45 and with underlying conditions ie diabetes, asthma, cancer survivor. Also teachers will only be given 10 days for covid quarantine if they have to quarantine the second time they have to take it from their sick leave or go unpaid. The district only offers long term disability for employees if it is cancer related or ICU. If you haven't been in the classrooms at the middle and high schools they are jam packed in there with no way to even be 3 feet away from someone. If I was a the helm I would choose what many districts across the nation have decided at this point. Elementary start as normal with the option of remote ( to keep federal funding ). The reason is the students don't change classes and the classes are smaller with only one teacher. (Elementary classes are smaller even in non-pandemic times). Then middle and high schools would either be remote or virtual until it is safe to go back. Middle and high school students can be home without a parent being there. For those households with poor wifi they could still go to school and have the ability to work in a room with a dean, guidance counselor or behavior coach for classroom management with Masks required. Thank you for reading and remember be smart and safe when you make the choice.

Wayne,

Seems you missed a valid point Dwn made.

Teachers and other school staff don't have 3 options. Their options are go into a classroom with 30 students, or find another career. Wanting requirements to reduce risks for teachers doesn't seem like whining.

Substitute teachers will be in high demand this year. Being a fearless individual who doesn't tolerate whining, I'm sure you've got your application in with the school district.

@Dwn - It's people not wearing masks who are keeping this virus going. Anyone serious about getting back to normal is not complaing about wearing a mask.

I wonder if anyone ever thought about moving the start date back a few weks. As is, kids are scheduled to start August 10, a date that is dictated, at least partially, by the state's testing calendar. If the start date got moved back four weeks, move testing and the last day of school back the same number of days.

Just a thought...

It's about time that parents take control of their kids education, big government has been screwing it up for years. If I had kids to raise in these uncertain times I and my wife would teach them the basics. We would also teach them life skills along with plenty of chores. A lot of the young people I meet these days can't hardly do anything for themselves and still live at home up into their twenties. Bad government or bad parenting, who knows? But whichever it is, it can be fixed.

So, with three options, two of which are staying home, why would masks be "encouraged" while on campus?

Why increase the risk against families and school staff/teachers on campus by "encouraging" masks.

What a weak option, all for the appeasement of the anti-maskers. They have their options by staying home. If you come on school property, masks should be required.

Those who want to keep their distance and wear masks are being forced by the Superintendent to comply with the wishes of the far right deniers.

The superintendent should sit in a classroom all day and change classes with each bell, go sit in the cafeteria, ride busses, etc. for a week... masked or unmasked... and see how comfortable he would be around his family after hours and all weekend.
