I can’t believe Flomaton needs a K-9 or can justify the costs
A trained K-9 if dual purpose is easily10-20k
A vehicle will need to be fitted with a K-9 carrier. Easily another 5k
Most K-9 Officer get a higher salary.
A training program will need to be in place to keep the dog proficient. This will result in overtime, travel, fuel, etc.
There will be vet costs, food costs, and general care.
K-9’s usually increase insurance and liability.

And with all that-it still may be worth it. But not without a true cost benefit analysis.
Don’t fall for this unless an independent analysis is done. It’s probably too expensive.

Escambia County Fl Road Prison crew got a dog from the pound and trained him him/her locally with other local department .He/she came in third place in a national meet.

The cost of this also included’s the training and all, or other factors…The reason why they are asking for donations. Dogs are cheap usually, But trained Drug sniffing attack dogs go to a specific school to learn there trade (like people) go to college. It is curious why they can afford new cruisers and i’m assume another cruiser or retrofit for the K-9…But cant afford a couple grand for the Dog and training. On a positive note I’m humbled they went with police cars instead of full size gas guzzling Suv’s that are becoming more common, Its such a waste to pay 10s of thousands for a decked out police Suv when police cars have been the standard for a long time and are probably less likely to roll over and have much better control and acceleration.

i think is’s a great idea, especially if it’s not being paid for by the city. i won’t mind donating to it. if you get it, run it through our schools on a regular basis.

Why would you get a dog that doesn’t bite for the police dept that’s like having a gun with no bullets leave the tracking dogs to search and rescue and get somthing packing a punch to eat the thugs up

There are plenty of other agencies nearby that I’m sure wouldn’t mind lending their puppy to Flomaton occasionally. The town already has more than enough law enforcement.

Why don’t they look into getting a federal grant for a K9 ? There are a lot of resources out there for LEO K9 program establishment…
