In compliance with the federal Real ID Act, Florida requires all applicants for a driver license or identification card to show proof of US Citizenship or lawful presence in the US. US Citizens are offered the opportunity to complete a voter registration application, while Non-US Citizens are not. US Citizenship is proven by a certified US birth certificate, US passport or Certificate of Naturalization.

Applicants for a Florida driver license or identification card must show proof of: US Citizenship, Social Security number, and residential address. Provided applicants show proof of US Citizenship, they are provided an opportunity to complete a voter registration application. US Citizens will receive a standard Florida driver license that is valid for six years at the counter.

Permanent Residents (green card) will receive a standard Florida driver license that is valid for six years at the counter. However, their record is marked as a Non-US Citizen, and they are not afforded an opportunity to complete a voter registration application.

Non-US Citizens making application for a Florida driver license or identification card must show proof of lawful presence to obtain credentials. Provided they can establish lawful presence, they are issued a credential with TEMPORARY (in bold red) to indicate their temporary status in the US; their credential expires on their last lawful date in the country. They are not afforded an opportunity to complete a voter registration application. For example, a Non-US Citizen in the country on a 60 day visa would only receive a 60 day credential.

Access to federal buildings, secure facilities, and air travel will be restricted to those with a Real ID credential or US Passport effective October 1, 2020. To learn more about Real ID, visit our website EscambiaTaxCollector.com.
