Plant a hefty chunk of "I Beam" about 3 feet down, & 4 feet above ground, about a foot or two forward of the mailbox. I doubt if the next hit & run person would have a vehicle left in the "run" condition. Years ago, when I lived in another state, I had my pile of garbage bags (before the days of roadside plastic bins) on the edge of my lawn, intentionally run over by I believe a bunch of teenagers who thought it was their idea of fun. A guy down the street, had his piled around a fire hydrant (probably not legal), & guess what happened when they tried running over his pile! Solution?
