i avoid wal mart just because of their check out policy. i like to pay with cash. and wal mart has 1 lane for cash customers. really irritates me.

The article stated there are still places to pay in person……the elderly do not have to pay online (or anyone else who doesn’t feel comfortable doing so). Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General and Piggly Wiggly are all places to pay…….I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t go to at least one of these places.
Why would this result in higher bills? Overhead costs are being lowered not raised.

I recall whenever I was a teenager they still had a few of the “full-service” gas stations. I rarely used them because the gas was always higher priced that the “self-serve” stations. So I guess there was a discount for not having to pay for service attendants. The self-check lanes at the grocery stores and Walmart are usually much quicker and easier than the cashier aisles, so I guess that’s the payoff there.

@Anne. I’m with you 100%. But it’s not just ala. power. Look around at the stores with a lot of “self check” check outs but few open with someone working the register. Pumping your own gas. The list goes on. Do you ever feel like asking for a discount because you are doing the job and not getting paid. when’s the last time you saw a greeter at the door at Wal- Mart? Each time you do a job just to pay the store selling what you want or need you have taken a job away from someone.

Maybe we can all go back to washboards and black and white Zeniths, and continue living in the past. Why support a brick and mortar location when it can be done electronically?

From the company stand point it’s more efficient….it’s less rent and salary they have to pay out but for the elderly, disabled and low income it will be another hardship……it was bound to happen with more people paying online…..Beverly , we’ll miss you!

most elderly people have no way to pay online, simply because they don’t even have a computer…they lived this long without one, so why waste their time…folks……….the good ole days are over………..and they aint coming back……………sad but true

Every time I hear the words pay online, I cringe. No. they cannot have my email address nor bank account numbers to sell online info.. No, I will not be the person to to cause another to lose their job. Yes, those numbers are out there, but I want someone to sue when it is they who screw up. I just love the way utility companies do what they want, knowing that we have no other choice but them.

This. Is so sad to me..so many of the elderly and lower income people in our areas will be the ones who are most hit; jobs will be eliminated. Someone should bring this to our President’s attention since his focus has been on saving jobs. Alabama Power is very politically motivated.

The only time I see this being a problem is when applying for new service. Some things are difficult to do online or over the phone.

Also, a lot of poorer people don’t have checking accounts or credit cards to pay online, so they walk in and pay with cash. They will have to learn to adapt.
