Running from your problems is never a good idea. If the same group would get involved in the current education system with their energy and ideas, maybe they could make a difference.

I have had three kids graduate from ECHS and graduate from major university’s. Education is provided at home, schools facilitate learning. Parents need to get involved.

I remember when I attended first and second grade at AC Moore in Atmore, under a similar system.

It worked well.

It is sad the the local officials do not care about the kids. It is a place living in the past. Refusing to allow new business to come
and create jobs…organic tax revenue. It is a place that fosters oppression for people of color. Atmore is a racist place. Who attends ECHS?

The sad truth of Atmore schools is that there is no parental involvement in the schools or children’s lives. Teachers can’t teach a student body that has no will to learn. The parents don’t care so the students don’t care when it comes to education.

I think it’s good thing when a community can have more of a say in what goes on in that community’s school system. However, when it comes to affordability, I don’t see how the city would not eligible for the same federal and state grants, that the county BOE gets.

Also, Escambia county (AL) school board members should not have to declare a political party in order to be on the ballot. This has, in the past, prevented some good folks from being on the board – because of straight party voting. IMHO

Atmore does not have the tax base to support a separate school system.

I applaud these individuals for stepping up for a change, but I’m afraid the city can’t run its own schools due to the cost. Bottom line school board members need to be replaced, because if the schools are failing for 3yrs in a row, then they have failed to do their job. For a change to happen, parents are going to have get involved; that means parents being parents, taking corrective actions with their children and visiting the schools, school board members are going to have to be more involved in the school system and ensure teachers are doing their jobs and receive training.

Since the city doesn’t own those buildings I don’t see how this could happen. The only thing they could do is try to acquire the old AC Moore and YMCA buildings and use those, but the city has already made it clear they don’t want to maintain those buildings. I just don’t see the city running their own bus system either, so how would those kids get to school?

I think this group needs to make a field trip to Brewton to see the costs involved in this proposal. Atmore is too poor, and people aren’t going to pay higher property taxes to support it.
