Grand Locust:

The level of security of which you are talking about is unprecedented for thousands of schools in Florida. This isn't something that can just be "fixed." You will have to hire additional people in each school to monitor cameras, maintain them and a control booth to operate doors similar to that if a jail or prison. This will cost an exuberant amount of money. Thats not including the cost of reinforcement of doors, windows, walls to become bullet proof so that an attacker cannot just shoot a window out and gain entry.

The cost for this is astronomical and in retrospect cannot be accomplished. This would also take 20 years to accomplish especially with all the government red tape. I don't think there is any real solution to this issue. We are the most wealthy country on Earth but this level of security and spending is far fetched. You would have to raise taxes to double the current rates to accomplish this. This would up end an economy and force people to into foreclosure/bankruptcy, ect. This is not just a "fix it" type of thing that can be accomplished.

Even that won’t completely work unless you have a huge wall/fence around the entire campus, which won’t work either. PE classes have to go outside, and then be able to get back inside. Parents have to be able to come in to get their children.

Unless the entire complex is completely indoors, kids have to go outside. Even with an entry system in place to check IDs and vehicles before entry, someone can still get in. Even with that in place, someone could just shoot the guard and enter.

Before someone starts screaming about gun control laws, don’t be so naive. The laws only deter the ones who actually OBEY the law. Criminals and those intent on doing harm will still get them. Ever heard of the black market?

Removing the stigma from mental health issues is the first step. The second is making it easier to obtain mental health services. Third is schools cracking down on bullying and FORCING the victims AND the perpetrators into counseling. Fourth is making parents understand that kids who never have consequences for their bad behavior...only get worse. There are plenty of other things but these are a vital beginning.

My point is that if someone is intent on doing harm, they will find a way. Yes, we can reduce the chances, but we definitely can’t elimate it.

You secure schools with video and locked entry system which does not allow anybody into a school, unless they are known and have gone through the entry metal detector. Kids do not get shot if the bad guys cannot get into a properly secured school. All the political debate about guns is stupid. secure school doors with systems which are proven and work. Kids die because doors are wide open and anybody can walk into a school. We lock our doors at home, but when it comes to protecting our children, the schools have multiple unsecured entries into most schools. Fix it.
