These folks are under rated heroes. The occupational death rate of a line man is far greater than police or fire, and in catastrophic storm conditions these men put their life on the line for all of us. A big thumbs up to the reciprocity and may they help as many as possible.

When Hurricane Ivan struck in 2004, we were one of the last to get electrical service restored on my backwoods trail in Alabama. It took almost three weeks.

It’s ironic now. A crew from North Carolina put wires and poles back together for us. They did show favoritism. That’s because the foreman of the crew stopped me one day on the highway. He was driving a Nissan Frontier, just like mine. He’d run over hurricane debris and flattened the last tire he had available. No way to get another. I agreed to let him take one of my tires and replace it with my doughnut spare, so,he could keep working. My conditions were he’d come to my backwoods road and get me some electricity. He did! We were lit up by the next day.

God be with the folks in the path of this thing. Our guys from Southern Pine and all the other hundreds of volunteers arriving to help will be facing horrible conditions.

Ivan was supposedly a category three when he roared ashore and was gone overnight. If he’d stayed three days, nothing would have been left behind. Prayers for the ones that are facing so much worse.

Angels in Bucket Trucks.
September 15, 2004 we were "Getting Ready" for Hurricane Ivan to come ashore around Gulf Shores, AL. We were not at all "Ready".
By the time it got dark many of us were without electricity and Ivan the Terrible roared inland in the absolute black of night. Landfall was around 2:06 AM.
September 16, 2004 and early light before sunrise showed us the horrible things that had happened to many tens of thousands of us here.
Remember seeing Gulf Power and trucks from states far from our area, many states away, they came in convoys escorted by the ECSO cars.
We Thanked them and begged them to restore electricity to our homes, businesses and schools.
They worked carefully and with a steady plan to bring back lights to our area.
August 23, 2005 less than a year later and while our area was still in recovery the workers of Gulf Power and other companies were responding to the area just west of us in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
