Yesterday Mr. Thomas, when the storm hadn't hit by 1:00 PM as forecasted school should have been cancelled for today. The storm wasn't just going away. It was just taking longer to get here. No child should have been on a school bus in the weather conditions that were taking place this morning. Common sense Mr. Thomas, plain common sense! As my father use to say, "use the brain God gave you"!

Sure, it sucks we are having to go back to school today with the weather as cappy as it is. That being said when you're children grow up their bosses aren't ganna care if it's storming like this.as for those who are worried about their high school kids driving in the rain...they'll have to do it eventually. I have only drove in the rain once or twice before today (and those times it was light rain), but I had to go to class today because college doesn't care if it's raining. If you don't let then drive in the rain now they never will and it is ganna be harder for them later in life.

I am very disappointed in Santa Rosa County school board. We are getting all the warnings and floods, and yet you want school in session. You are punishing students with being unexcused for bad weather conditions. If the absence is not excused students cant make up their work so they are going for the sake of there education. Your asking high school students who just started driving to drive to school on slick an flooded roads with the little experience they have. Congratulations you got what you wanted! You wanted your students to go to school if they get hurt because you refused to cancel it should be on you to take care of it. This was a very bad decision, hope you can find a way to fix it.

I'm sorry, but this is not Malcom Thomas' fault!! He made the best decision at that time based on the information he had! And where did he get that information? From our so called Weather Channel 'experts'...who has failed to deliver correct data and information to us (more than once). They too, don't have all the answers for sure, but please stop blaming one man for this! He's already stated that parents who kept their kids home will have excused absences. Sometimes, we as parents need to take the responsibility and stop blaming others! Goodness, gracious!!!

Yes a mistake was made most likely based on the weather reports that the storm was fast moving and would be over quickly but it wasn't. But, there is a pretty simple solution. If you don't feel safe sending your child to school, Don't. Contact the teacher (pretty much all of them have social media sites for this purpose, get the lesson plan if possible. Let them work on it at home. One day missed isn't gonna ruin their school career and pretty sure that any absence on this particular day will be marked excused due to weather.

@Anne

No, we don't "skip work" when it's "raining out".
However, it's not only the job of the school district to educate our children, but also to keep them safe.

When you ask high school kids to drive to school and buses to run their routes in unsafe road conditions, then you're not keeping kids safe but rather putting their safety at risk.

Yesterday they closed schools in an "abundance of caution", to quote Mr. Thomas. But as @ensley boy said, "where's all that caution today?".

Very poor decision by the school district.

I agree. Rain...flooding. Best idea to stay off the roads if you can. However our school superintendent makes a BAD call like this. Not safe for buses or kids!!! What are they thinking. If I had kids they would be at home also. Unbelievable. Mobile and Mississippi schools are closed and WE are the ones getting the flooding rains. Makes no sense. Take a look outside Mr Thomas or watch the weather channel!

They should have canceled school today my 3 elementary kids are home with me out of this weather. I'm not going to send them out in the rain to wait on the bus and I'm definitely ain't going to send them out on these dangerous roads. I'm not risking their lives for a school day that should have been canceled.
