Oh, here it is:

Barbara J. Pariente, R. Fred Lewis, Peggy A. Quince

Mandatory retirement: January 8, 2019

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_Florida#Justices

"The current governor is Republican Rick Scott, who took office on January 4, 2011, following the 2010 election. He was re-elected in 2014, and his second term began on January 6, 2015."

So there need be no vacancy to fill until some two days after he leaves office -- unless four years is stretchable.

...also, can DeSantis appoint if Gillum is elected governor??????

Article V SECTION 8. Eligibility.—No person shall be eligible for office of justice or judge of any court unless the person is an elector of the state and resides in the territorial jurisdiction of the court. No justice or judge shall serve after attaining the age of seventy years except upon temporary assignment or to complete a term, one-half of which has been served.

More details at https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Constitution#A5S10

For details on the justices: http://www.floridasupremecourt.org/justices/index.shtml

I haven't checked out the details.

This story is missing critical information on exactly what our state constitution says about governor's appointments to the courts, which would help readers better understand the process.

First. If Scott wins the U.S. Senate race, doesn't he need to be in D.C. for the opening day of Congress on January 3rd to be sworn in? If this the case, he'd have to be out of the governor's office before the new governor take over on January 8th.

Second. Exactly by law when do the Florida Supreme Court justices have to be out of their positions? Without this official date being published, it makes it hard to make an informed decision on whether or not Scott is correct in his belief that it is his authority to fill vacancies that have yet to occur. If those vacancies occur before he must leave office then he should be able to fill them.

Third. Does the Florida Senate have approval of the governor's appointments to the Florida Supreme Court? The article does not address this and knowing how the process works or doesn't work at the Federal level, this could take months.

Lastly, I know William didn't write this article and I don't take issue with NorthEscambia. But if writers in Tallahassee want an informed electorate, they need to do a better job.
