Did Century’s Property Tax Increase Violate The Town Charter?

I see a Council with no other options waving the white flag. The St. Attorney is breathing down your neck and you knowingly break your Charter, again?! Years and years of financial abuse takes a toll. It can’t be rectified in one year’s budget.

Here you go @grandlocust.......

If they reduced next year's budget they are on the right track, good job!

Now...the property tax rate was increased so that they would get the same amount of dollars as last year so I don't believe any body would pay that much more if any unless they did some mad renovations to their property recently. Remember due to the tornado 2 years ago property values went down . ...they're just making up for it. So technically you shouldn't pay more than you did 2 years ago. But...will they change the rate when property values go up???

The Town of Century has presented to State of Florida balance budgets every year.
This is another example of making up numbers on paper. The Town had losses
from 2012 to 2016 of over $1.800,000. According to last audit available the town had $383,000 and owe $5,311,000 to its other funds. In 2012 the special revenue fund had $1,273,000 and was owed $2,230,000. In 2016 special revenue fund had $674,000 and was owed $3,927,000. And now for 2017 and part of 2018 and according to the accountant has only $122,000. It looks like the special revenue has
about dried up. Where is the general fund going to get its help from? Not the gas fund, Water fund? One day soon the Mayor will call all the employees in and tell them that there is no salaries.

I think I will throw a flag for piling on.......these folks have reduced the budget and attempted to right the ship. How about giving them a chance as some of these negative comments assume that the town's choices are bad. It sounded like a much needed correction to me, and people should be commended when trying to be more efficient in delivery of governmental services. The problems took years to develop and the solutions will take years to fix, but constantly calling these people stupid is unjustified where this seems to be a common sense step in addressing problems. Public service should not be an excuse for people to treat folks like doormats.
