This stretch of 29 is more like the ‘McDavid 500′ in the mornings. With almost every adult driving, I’m surprised there aren’t more wrecks these days. In general, people are too much in a hurry.

Ok let me put this argument to rest. Cars today are much safer then the tanks we drove 50 , 40 even 30 years ago. Why? Because as someone said, first, they absorb the impact and crumple , second, they are lighter, so less energy on impact, and third, they have airbags everywhere now. That curtain airbag probably saved this persons life along with a seat belt.

If you look close you will see both door hinges have been cut in half by the first responders. Probably with the Jaws Of Life. There are crumple zones that are meant to absorb and direct the force of the impact away from the passenger compartment.

Not sure about this particular stretch of hwy 29, however most of hwy 29 north of the paper mill is really bad in rainy weather, ruts in the road fill with water and no real shoulder space for either side of the road amplyfy small mistakes from even experienced drivers. Not a road to travel in any kind of bad weather.
Of course it could be a simpler explanation of closing time at the local bar.

There was an accident through that stretch last Thursday evening driver north bound crossed median into south bound struck a vehicle then shot back across median to north bound all the way over into a ditch and wood line. I think many a couple of factors, driver distracted, or just over confident with speed or just out driving their headlights.

You are right- I hear it said so often how cars and trucks are not made as well as they used to be due to photos like this; the opposite is true. They are made “squishier” now because people are squishy; a solid steel tank of a vehicle made in the 60’s might fare better, damage-wise, but the person inside would not as they would still be moving at the speed of the vehicle when it stopped.

All of that inertia must be absorbed somewhere; better the vehicle die and the human be saved.
