Not every home is accessible to a school bus. You would throw a fit if a school bus stopped every 100 feet to pick up and drop off children and even then, the parents might not be home or sober enough to even come to the door.

Many of you can’t even be bothered to stop for a stopped school bus even though you risk killing them every time you shoot by when the stop arms are out. Nothing requires parents to send children to the bus stop alone — other than inconvenience.

“Whether a parent chooses to have their children walk what is known as a “reasonable walking distance” is left to the parent’s discretion. However, it is the distance at which transportation services begin. The reasonable walking distances between home and the bus stop are:

· 1/2 mile for elementary school students
· 1 mile for high school students

“* Florida Administrative Code establishes the distance between home and the bus stop as 1.5 miles for all students, but the Escambia County School District has set a different criteria.

“Note: Distances apply only to the extent that publicly-maintained all-weather roads can be accessed”

Do you know that children go missing every single day not to far away from where we live?

Parents need to be calling and raising cane about the children being put off the bus so far from the bus stops when crap like this is going on. Children should not be left at bust stops alone! and should not be put off the bus ANYWHERE but their homes! The county can pay for a lot of thing which are not necessary but, can’t pay for another couple of bus drivers so that all children can be put off at their homes.

This rule applies to even children with IEPverified disabilities. We just had a go-round with the transportation department here in the North End.
