Just as an exercise in thinking of other possibilities:

5A. Was addled by the incident and not thinking straight.
6. Couldn’t wait because I thought I needed medical attention immediately.
7. Had been carjacked and my captors ordered me to leave.
8. Was fleeing some criminals who were trying to kill me
9. Was taken by some criminals who had been trying to catch and kill or otherwise hurt me.
10. Didn’t actually flee but was thrown out by the wreck and nobody has noticed me yet.

These are unlikely but conceivable.

Folks are leaving the scene of accidents because they get in less trouble when they have something to hide. Come on, citizens, let’s exercise our legal rights and get together on changing the laws to overcome this. We the People have a number of legal rights, and it’s our duty, to protect ourselves and our freedom. We Do have the power.

@ Carl: You are absolutely correct. However, I see the other points of view too. The last two times I was in an accident, the other driver fled. These were both rear end accidents and one of the drivers was obviously impaired (the first one), the other was texting (the second one). I saw them coming, but couldn’t move because of traffic, so I had to sit there and watch it happen. As I was getting out, both times, the other car pulled around me and fled. I have a picture of the vehicle, but the tag is too blurred to make out. The tag on the first vehicle that hit me was registered to a trailer in Ft. Meyers, so a stolen tag. It does have to stop somewhere, but until it’s aggressively pursued by law enforcement, it won’t. I’m tired of being responsible and having to pay for the damage these buffoons cause and then flee. Cowards and scumbags for sure. Where are MY rights?

We have “Due Process” in our country. The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution each contain a due process clause. Due process deals with the administration of justice and thus the due process clause acts as a safeguard from arbitrary denial of life, liberty, or property by the government outside the sanction of law. You cannot just seize property. Not all drivers that flee are the owner of the vehicle. Some of the vehicles are stolen. Some are kids joy riding. The driver might have had other transportation to seek medical help. Some are worthless scum that wrecked this vehicle and ran because they are worthless scum. But their might be a lien holder that would suffer even more loss.
