I think it’s great to reduce the fee and will get several cats adopted out so that they don’t either get euthanized or live in the pound forever.

While it is possible that an adopted cat could be abused, I don’t think conducting background checks on people should be a requirement to adopt a pet. Even if the pet ends up elsewhere, rather than with the adopted family, at least it has an opportunity at a better life. I would also go so far as to say that the adopted pets are probably well cared for in most of the cases. Requiring a background check is costly, and people simply won’t pay for it to adopt a pet unless they have more money than they know what to do with, and it doesn’t matter to them how they spend it.

I have 4 cats – all feral. I had them spayed and vaccinated and they live outside under our pole barn with the chickens and rabbits. They are fed twice a day and hunt for rodents. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship. I’m the only one they will allow to pick them up or pet them.

Great job by the folks at the animal shelter!

A great idea to reduce the adoption fee. BUT, are you doing any kind of background check on those wanting to adopt? Some people aren’t fit to have children much less pets. I have 5 cats and 2 kittens myself, and they do not like being handled by children. So you adopt these pets out to people with children – the cat scratches the child and the next thing you know the cat is being abused. Slapped, kicked and blame it all on the cat.

Just saying – Saving pets from being mistreated.
