Wife was driving our 2 ton 73 Olds 98. She kept cool, didn't slam on brakes or swerve, just hit the dog. He looked like a wedge shot out of a sand trap. Poor dog, but no alternative. Animals roam and get in the way of vehicles. I believe it is only natural that most of us would swerve thinking that's the way out of the situation. But accidents as this one happens when we try to save the animal. It's different in a situation that my Grandson was in. He was traveling on Jacks Branch Road and a dog ran from the ditch to chase him. He maintained his lane, braked but hit the dog and was thrown from the motorcycle. The owner ran out and started cursing my Grandson with him lying in the ditch. The dog yelped and ran off. My Grandson finally made it up okay and drove his damaged motorcycle a few miles home. I react to trying to avoid hitting it. Praying for the people involved in this accident that they will be o.k. That said, for the future and for others: I told my sons no matter how hard it is to do, make up your mind in advance that any dog, deer or other animal running out in front of you is dead. Don't risk your life or the lives of others to try to save a suicidal animal. Brake if you safely can but don't kill yourself, don't wreck your car trying to dodge, don't hit a tree, truck, ditch or bridge.
