This is a bad intersection. the main cause of congestion here is the store. Turning onto 97 and then onto Crabtree Church road to get to the store creates a pile up , especially for people wanting to travel NW on 97. Crabtree Church Road intersects with 97 too close to the 29 – 97 intersection. Seems to me the easiest fix would be to move the intersection of Crabtree Church Road and 97, and add a turning lane for the store access. Of course this accident wasn’t due to any of the above. This accident was clearly cause by someone not yielding the right of way. Maybe a left turn on arrow only is what’s needed here, especially with the speed limit along the stretch of highway.

DOT begin plans to build an overpass for HWY 29 at that intersection. Then with the left turn to 97 going UNDER 29 all this will be avoided.

I was hit by a 74-year-old lady in 1995′ish at Glover Ln and Hwy 90 with this scenario. She knew she had a green light but she got confused about who had the right of way when she was turning left onto Glover Ln. Fortunately, there was no one in the outside lane next to me so I was able to avoid a major impact and she just clipped the rear corner of my truck so neither of us was injured.
I give credit to the AMA Motorcycle safety courses I had taken in previous years. If you want to learn how to drive defensively, take a motorcycle safety course.
If you or someone you know is elderly and drives, there are refresher driving courses available for seniors to sharpen their skills and I’m pretty sure insurance companies offer discounts for having completed the course.

Chris, I don’t know about old, but yes I think you are confused and probably should NOT be driving. Yes, I-110 does run North and South so does Highway 29. And yes, I-10 does intersect with I-65 IN MOBILE, ALABAMA some 60 odd miles away from Highway 29.

Escambia County Florida and Alabama DOT need to get together and solve this repeated issue of traffic flow on Highway 29 North and South Bound minor or serious or deadly traffic wrecks ruin peoples plans.
The travelers from out of town-how do you think they continue with their trip…As a former fire fighter (16 years) in Alabama I saw a lot of people stranded. Not only are their trips changed their lives are changed because someone will not spend the money to correct a problems.
And people will not stop texting, drinking and all of the things that cause wrecks, they are not accidents they are wrecks call it what it is. It’s not just poor highway planning it’s all of us too.
DRIVE CAREFULLY AND ALWAYS BE AWARE OF THE OTHER VEHICLES.

Maybe I am old and confused, but doesn’t I-110 pretty much run North/South? How would one extend it to I-65? And doesn’t I-10 run into/intersect I-65?

The problem is, if the commissioners had voted to extend I-110 to I-65 some 18 yrs ago we wouldn’t have as many accidents on 29.

REGARDING:
“Do you have a free left turn on green from 29 to 97 . . .or do you HAVE TO WAIT for green turn arrow?”

If vehicles were in the left turning lanes long enough before the light changed, there will be a green arrow first, followed after a time with simply green for those who go when traffic allows.

If traffic is too heavy to make the turn and nobody is coming from 97, the light will change back directly to a green arrow.

Even if you have a green arrow, if other cars are not yielding the right of way, it is only reasonable to keep waiting until it is clear to turn — safer and cheaper than intentionally hitting them.
