I don't know about all of these men & women that work in there but I know half or more, are on the lookout as soon as they enter those gates, & some on the streets, inmates do get out ya know & if these officers have been threatened & yes, they have been, they take it serious. It sounds to me that you might be assuming that the officer wasn't doing his job(not paying attention to his surroundings). If you can do any better, seems to me that they might need you.
