I think that it’s a shame if you’ve been watching someone for nine months and knowing someone with medical issues…and didn’t offer a helping hand…shame on you…not saying much for your humanity…..sounds like you need some charges for not being a good neighbor….smh….my prayers are with you Mr.Van Deese….I know how it feels to be a victim of noisy people that don’t speak the truth….bless your heart..shame on you Elisa…..not a good person,if you was so worried,offer help ,that’s the neighborly thing to do ….

I think it’s a sad state of affairs when so many people are willing to throw the human away to “save” the animal. Just because telling on someone and “helping” a horse makes you feel morally superior, it certainly doesn’t make you morally superior. If you really want to make a difference, help the humans so that they can, in turn, help the animal. Be a good neighbor and help all of God’s creatures, great and small. Maybe we could all do a better job of caring for one another instead of getting our jollies by being a coward and anonymously reporting people who are presumed guilty until proven innocent.

I, too, have known Van for many years. It is true that he is one of the most generous people you’ll ever know. I have also seen how he has cared for his many, many animals over the years. I have never seen one ounce of cruelty towards any of them, whether it was his dogs, cows, chickens, horses, goats, or even his pet doe deer (long time ago.) He always treated every animal as if they were as important as himself. I don’t know all the details on this, but he should not be charged with a crime.

I have known Van since I was 6 years old and can tell you that you will not find a better person. He has had several health scares that I know about. People should really stop the rush to judge until ALL of the facts come in.

Thank God for rescues like PER. There arent enough voices out there for the ones who have to suffer and cant cry for help. All the people who are bashing PER are probably just upset because they know they better get off their asses and take care of they’re animals properly. Because if they don’t, they too will have the rescue ladys nose all up in their business. If all of You really knew the stories and seen the suffering of all of the horses that they take in, You would be ashamed of Your negative comments. These people devote their lives to helping the animals that were failed by thier owners. That is , if they survive. Sadly, its to late for some. Thank You PER for not giving up. The Horses thank You dearly. And yes, for some of us animal lives matter too.

I only have one question. Where were all these FRIENDS that say they knew he was going through such hard times and in and out of the hospital when he was in need ? If they were stopping by to check on their friend and the horses were across the road one would think they could see the horses needed help.

I am curious as to why it’s just the horses that seemed to be “neglected”? There are clearly cows in the same pastures with the horses yet nothing is mentioned about them? Were the cows eating and not the horses?

I don’t know Van personally but have family who does. He took some cattle over to my brother in laws house a few years back during a drought because there wasn’t enough for them to graze on his place. Doesn’t seem like someone who wants to abuse animals. I have never heard a bad word spoken about the man.

I too have known Van for many many years. I don’t know why or how this happened to these poor horses and it breaks my heart to look at the pictures knowing they were not taken care of properly BUT I have known Van for longer than I can remember and he would never intentionally let this happen! He is a great man who has always been very involved in the community. He has always been a man to step up to the plate and help anyone who needs help. Again, I am not condoning the condition of these horses, but did anyone stop to think that maybe his medical condition could have contributed to his “treatment” , or lack of treatment of the horses? I agree with others – there’s more to this story.
If I didn’t know the kind, gentle, giving person that Van is, I would be the first person to jump on the bandwagon accusing him of intentional mistreatment of the horses but he has always loved his horses and I just cannot believe that this was an intentional act on his part. I will say that he must be very sick as I did not even recognize his picture until I started reading the article and saw his name-and I have known Van for over 25 years so that should tell you something. He has always been a VERY thin man all the years I have known him. So, people before you start accusing and blaming, you might want to get on your knees and pray for him (and yourselves) because thats what God would want you to do. This could be your family one day. I would hate to know that I passed judgement on someone (which is not any of our places to do so) who was this sick and I made the situation worse by leud opinions and comments about him without knowing the full story. You should all be ashamed of yourselves!
I will be praying for your health Van, as well as the horses.

Horses are livestock.
If more owners sent them to slaughter sooner, this kind of problem would not exist.

And what happens to “rescued” horse after they are brought back from the edge?
I bet you can not adopt it without a nice fee to PER.
