Good to see opportunity coming to Atmore.

Atmore would not be a bad place to retire. I am not familiar with the range of services that the Hospital has to offer for the older citizen, but it has to be light years beyond the old Green Lawn. Atmore is filled with homes from the cozy cottage to the borderline opulent and these properties are reasonably priced, thus attractive to the retiree.

Retirees require more services as they age and this means requirements/opportunity for those qualified to fulfill these needs. Atmore should really consider marketing it'self as a retirement community. That's how I see it anyway.

As to the comment of their not being any persons qualified/educated to the local area. I live in Atmore (originally from Bratt) and hold 2 degrees one being an Associates degree in Electrical w/ a minor in Instrumentation and also work in one of the plants in this area. I can first hand tell you the problem with jobs in this area and them seeking elsewhere. It's not the education, it's a factor of 2 things, one of which I know personally. I moved to Mobile to go to school, upon graduation the only job I could find was back here, due to the fact that every electrical job I applied for wants 2 or more years experience. This causes people with a degree to get looked over. Secondly, the reason this area pulled me back is they were the only plant not requiring experience, but here's the kicker, the pay stinks. I'm probably making 8-10 dollars an hour less than someone who does go out of Atmore and not far either for the exact position. I worked at Gp in Brewton, Al. before I went back to school and made more mixing gatorade, getting lunches and going to get supplies for the paper machine, a gopher basically. From what I've seen the people that do come from other places to here to work are under qualified for the positions they hold and happily take the measly wages. I would love to apply for this job and get one, but I hope they pay way better than anything else that comes to Atmore.

@ Atmore Resident: I was thinking the same thing. Very well said. If you want better for yourself, then you have to do better for yourself.

I think it is important to note that the reason these jobs usually get taken by outsiders is due to the education level of our Atmore residents. If you want to get hired for one of these jobs, go to college or complete a trade program that qualifies you for the job. I'm not saying that Atmore residents aren't educated either. My point is that so many of our intelligent students go to college or complete trade programs, but they never come back to Atmore. Don't be satisfied with your high school diploma. Continue your education so that you can represent our city well and show that we do have a highly qualified prospective workforce. Everyone complains about Atmore and how it has nothing to offer, but it will never improve if the residents don't educate themselves after high school. We have missed out on major companies coming in because they say our population cannot meet the qualifications to fill the jobs.

Bob C.
The Escambia County Elected Politicians have no control over new bars or ‘affordable’ housing in the downtown area.
They can only say where they are allowed or not allowed.
Florida does not have income taxes, so unlike Alabama, Florida is not subsidizing employers with income taxes paid by existing Florida employees.

What you want to bet none of these 35 people, except the lowest paid job or two, will actually be from Atmore. Like another company in Atmore with 40 or so people in the office where the good paying jobs are, none of them live in Atmore. They live mostly in Florida, all the way down to Pensacola and commute every day. The only people from Atmore working there are the lowest paid production workers.

Congrats Atmore! This is the kind of jobs the area needs. Hopefully higher paying jobs that will encourage its employees to live here and invest in the community.
Congrats on a job well done in recruiting this company!
