I'm from Jay and I have many fond memories of the rivalry between our schools (including Flomaton). I miss the good old days of the EREC. I'm sad to see this go. I think the worst thing they ever did was closing this school to begin with. This was one thing the community was real proud of and it brought 'em out on Friday night. I know how I would feel if they tore down the rest of the Jay school. Century I'm rootin' for you. Things will get better.

That's right Dana.
I think we all see the reality of the situation but that does not block the memories nor the hearts desire to see it live on. Maybe the flagpole monument could be restored and saved. Something physical to go with so many people's memories.

Proud CHS grad 79 !!!

Perhaps some bricks could be salvaged and repurposed if and when it does come down. You may rue the day to try to clean the mortar off but firepits, planters, walkways, borders, keep a memento yet give it new life.

I like hearing the stories and appreciate that the possible loss of a landmark and building that meant so much to so many is yet another collective loss to the community in the aftermath of the tornado. Its easy to look in objectively from the outside, and know loss and change is inevitable, it happens everyday, we know. To keep and restore a building takes a lot of money and the owner has to be the one to make that decision. This is just another blow after the initial destruction. Even so as we come to realize things may not be exactly as before, as we let go and move on it is important to acknowledge the loss.

My brothers (3) and I graduated from CHI as did my mom. One comment stated we are living in the past. Old saying goes , forgetting the past means repeating it. Building should have been put on the national historical registry. We raised enough money to bring old 100 back for restoration, we could certainly have done the same with CHS.

You people do realize this building, which was falling apart before the tornado, is structural unsound? You do realize that this school closed 20 years ago? Many, many Century kids have graduated from other schools. Despite your beliefs that they must have a school in Century, Century's kids have gone on to have fruitful, productive lives in ways you apparently can't fathom.

You can hold onto your Blackcat Pride, but you must move on. The school has been dead for 20 years. Century kids graduating this year were not yet born when it closed. And they are going to do well in their futures without Century High.

Quit living in the past and realize that tearing down a dangerous 80-year old building won't kill your town. You've done that already by living in the past.
