There should be a program where they have to work to pay for the cost of incarceration. In 2010 the average cost to house an inmate was $31000 a year. This was out of 40 states that were studied. They receive, food, clothing, shelter, and medical/dental care while incarcerated. Many inmates finish high school and take college courses many getting degrees. All this at taxpayers expense. And yes I know that people that leave prison with a degree are less likely to be a repeat offender but they should at least be expected to pay back the cost of their education once they are out, and work off their cost for the other benefits while they are in prison. It should not be a free ride. I am not talking about services that are needed to run a prison such as cooking, laundry, yard work, or building maintenance, those are things we all do in our homes everyday.
