So, William, you are saying only those that have the streetlights in their neighborhood or area will have extra tax added to their tax bill? If so, how is the amount figured for each property owner that has those streetlights on their street? The “outdoor lighting”, let’s face it, is a streetlight that the person that has it in front of their house has added to their electric bill, you can call it security lighting all you want, doesn’t change that fact.

I really don’t know, but I bet Escambia County has lower than average property tax.

Actually no….this is a CRA (Community Redevelopment Area), so tax money from the CRA pays for CRA projects such as the street lighting. The lighting is funded by the property owners in the CRA

Cool, property owners get to pay for the electricity on streetlights in areas they don’t live in. One good thing is when they get shot out the power consumption will go down temporarily. The bad thing is property owners will be paying for the replacement bulbs, which ain’t cheap I bet.

Oh well, property tax goes up every year. Don’t pay it & you’ll see who really owns that house & land you got the deed to.

As a resident of Cantonment, I am pleased to read that the Cantonment Redevelopment Area and the County Commissioners are taking action and following through on an initiative that began in 2010. I pray that the new street lights add safety to the area and reduce crime.

The electricity for the Street lights that are on public roads is paid for by the county and is part of the county tax budget, so it is a shared expense. Each person has the right to add their own “street light” to their own property, but as CW states, it’s more for your own security and that you have to pay for.

Regarding Debbie’s comment on the $400 cost, that’s a fair price when you consider that is the installed cost, not just the price of the materials.

Overall I see this as a positive thing for those within the CRA and those who live in Cantonment in general. I hope that things keep improving!!

I pay for my own street light and WHO is responsible for those lights you are installing? No body cares that I have lived in the dark off Hwy 297 near Muscogee Road.

Boy howdy that is over $400 per light ! I know things are expensive these days but that just seems ridiculous. Just my little humble opinion.
