Palms are definitely native to NWFL. Take a trip to the unmolested parts of NWFL like St. Vincent Island and areas around there to see beaches and woods full of palm trees.

The fact that palm trees are not native is a big myth that seems to make its rounds around discussions. But it’s simply not true.

Cabbage Palms certainly are native to the panhandle, as well as coastal Alabama. You are getting them confused with non-native Mexican Fan palms or Queen palms, those are the ones damaged by the cold.

Palm trees are not indigenous to NW Florida. They don’t belong here. At some point when we get a cold snap and they freeze and die, please don’t spend money replacing them with more Palm trees that will also freeze and die.
Planting Short or Medium Needle Pines would be a better idea.

Moneyman. I think that is only the case if all the poles were the same height. From the looks of the picture it appears the American flag pole is higher than the others.

It makes me feel a renewed sense of pride for the area and entrance into Florida to see things improving. But yes check your speed. I’ve seen ESCO pull someone over blue lights on the 15 MPH curve.

Isn’t the U.S. flag supposed to be flown on the left side instead of the center? I know it looks better in the middle but I don’t think that is correct.

I love the palm trees in gardens of natives at our borders, it helps to tie the state together, the whole of Florida is technically coastal. I think it’s a wonderful idea to welcome people to our state with palm trees. I live in the country near Century, don’t want any in my yard it just doesn’t seem to fit. But, I have a business in AL and cross into Century almost daily and the new entry is a nice welcome home! Some people seem to be slowing down a bit just to see.

I see people stop all the time to take pictures at the sign. The saw blade leaves a lot to be desired.
