Kathy, there are a lot more bears out there than you think. Look up Apalachicola Times, two years ago around Christmas, and read about the 15 year old who was nearly mauled to death by a black bear. And no, she wasn’t running around in the woods. She was on a well lit street on her way to the store when she was attacked. The bears are well protected so they don’t have any natural fear of humans. If that girl’s dog hadn’t started barking and distracted the bear, she would be dead now. It happened in Eastpoint, Fl, area of Apalachicola. If my child was nearly killed by a black bear that was so brave it would hand around by the outside of a well populated store, I would have no issue with controlling them by death. At least deer don’t chase you to kill and eat you.

What does a citation mean? Is there a fine? Jail? Killing cubs and lactating females is the kind of thing that give hunters a black eye.

Really? We’re in FLORIDA, lady. Bears are active year-round here.

It should be illegal to hunt and kill black bears, they are not plentiful like deer.
Why would anyone want to kill one?

You have to take anything the National Humane Society says with a grain of salt. These people would have the whole country living on tofu and berry’s if they had their way. They are against the commercial meat producers in this country at every level, from the farm to the slaughter houses, and they would outlaw hunting at every level if they could.

Even though I’d like to go on a hunt one day, I’d give it a year or two to see how the population reacts. Don’t go nuts with a hunt again too soon.
