My child attends Brown Barge Middle, and I would not feel comfortable having criminals right next door... not to mention the negative impact the jail will have on nearby businesses. Also, why build a jail on a main roadway like Airport Blvd?? That is a direct road for Sacred Heart employees, like myself. I personally do not want to pass by a jail every day on my way to work! Why don't they build it AWAY from citizens?? Escambia County is huge... I am sure they could find a spot way out in the middle of nowhere. Why does the jail have to be built in the middle of the city? All 3 sites are preposterous! It is clear the county leaders are not thinking about it's good, upstanding citizens. Why should we have to be punished into looking at an eye sore such a jail every day? I want to stay as far away as possible from that place! With a jail, comes more crime, and poverty...something Escambia County has enough of. And what are they planning on doing with the old jail? Letting is sit and rot, like so many other abandoned buildings in this County?? This is not an issue that should be taken lightly. Here is your issue, the BOCC should not be in the jail business. Give the jail back to the Sheriff who has the knowledge of operations and can keep a better eye on the budget. Inmates are bused to the courthouse multiple times a day, surely that should be a factor in this decision? The prisoners at Camp 5 are done with their court phase (at least before the jail explosion) so they no longer need transportation to and from the courthouse. There is also not much land available surrounding Camp 5, the area has grown very quickly, if they wanted to build a jail there they should have bought up land 10-20 years ago. Has our esteemed county commission thought of the possibility of having to evacuate their new jail every time we get a hard rain, or have hurricane warnings posted. Who with any common sense would even consider such a site? The possibilities are endless. The ambulance chasing lawyers and the justice dept. could be kept busy for years suing the county over exposing prisoners to the toxins present there. Yes, locking people up is a fast growing, profitable business, so the money to build should be there to the nth power. There is no problem here, only how fast & how big it can be built. And don't tell me the county does not already own PLENTY of land this can go on. This area is chock full of morons running around like idiots breaking the law, & the county gets money for housing them, everybody in the system from the highest judge down to the lowliest correctional facility custodian should be making a good living, & if not it's bcuz somebody is being greedy.
