@Jim
Sorry i didn't see this earlier, although i'm certain i'd hear silence anyway.
All time high huh ? Wow, roughly 116,000 black bears east of the Mississippi River. In comparison to 415,000 west of it (not including Wyoming) which eould add at least another 10-20,000.
Going solely by, LA,MS,AL,FL,GA and SC, there are roughly 10,130 black bears. That's not even 10% of whats west of Mississippi River so as a hunter who would love to have the variety of bear meat, no hunt should be warranted at this time.
All time high, ha !

I find it ironic how the ppl who are in favor of this bear hunt can always find an excuse as to why it helps the bear population if we kill a few. That's how they become extinct. Let's go out and kill a few hundred/thin them out until they become on the endangered list again. Just like the deer. Guess I am too much an animal advocate. But, I think this bear hunt is terrible.

@Kathy - Black Bear populations all along the Eastern US, from Florida to Maine, are at all-time highs. Not sure where your info comes from.
Hunting actually helps keep populations healthy, which in the long run, ensures maintaining population numbers.

The law should read in favor of the bear. Since this is their habitat, and most conflicts are the fault of people (ie; leaving garbage where bears can get to it), FWC should have to investigate for conflicts or reports and cite people for attracting bears. If they were numerous (and not just in a couple small places) i'd say sure ,why not, i'm a hunter. We eat fish, crawfish, deer, and hog, all caught or killed locally. Three times a week at a minimum.
Please don't tell me the bird seed you put out attracted a bear. Your need to see birds (cause they ain't gonna starve) does not outweigh the bears necessity to live. I know they cause some rukus in a few places. No doubt someone with money or bigshot at Eglin had an opinion because they or someone they know had an issue eith a bear. While plentiful in that area, they aren't till you get near Mobile.
Infact, the ruling goes against a stated goal of wildlife officials including FWC in a multu-state partnership as evidenced on the commission's website under Perdido River Wma. You have to read but look it up. That's why both sides purchased thousands of acres a piece. To have an area for the black bear to travel to and fro Lower Mississippi River Valley. So wow, funny how all this money involved in purchasing the land and its management to bring the black bear here so they populate is being crapped on to hunt it. Talk about being contradictory.

I have been hoping they would not allow killing Black bears, there are not many left.
We need to protect them from all of the people who just love to shoot something!

Im so glad for this lawsuit to halt the senseless killing of these bears. We have moved into their habitat and the easiest way to solve this problem is to kill them. I don't agree.

Shooting an animal does not make you a stronger man. It makes you a weak man.

Maybe the bears should be issued human permits in certain areas. LIKE THE DEEP WOODS?
