@Countrygirl. I guess the key words in your comment was “speeding in the road”, interesting wording. I have also driven in other cities and areas and have alway found the Atlanta by-pass to be one of the most difficult. Canada is another fun place to drive. The real thrills come from driving in the northeast in snow and “black ice” I do not totally disagree with you on some drivers. One of the fun places to see the lack of driving skills is 97 & 29. A lot of the driver turning south on 29 from 97 have no idea what the acceleration lane is for. They turn south bound and then cut to the far inside lane and stay there until until they get to Pensacola Bay. We all have to take into consideration 97 is not an expressway. Farm equpement moves on it school buses and those “putters” to use your term.

@ molino jim- I grew up here but have lived in many different places all over the
world, and the deep south is the ONLY place where people pulling into the road
from lanes and side roads expect the person speeding in the road to slow down
and/or stop for them to get up to speed… if you took the driver’s out of the south and
put them in NYC, Chicago, or any major city, they would be eaten alive… God forbid
they ever have to drive in a 3rd world country!!! Don’t get me wrong, I love the south,
but if everybody would just be alert when they drive, it would help tremendously! Send everyone to Germany for a year and they will understand what I mean about
the “putters!”

@ Countrygirl. –I guess I’m one of those old people who putters along on 97. I felt going 55 to 60 was fast enough, but I still get passed on hills and curves. I know it’s a hard concept for some people to understand that you can leave home 5/10 minutes early and get to work/school or what ever on time. I’ve lived up here for a long time and have seen it just getting worse. I do what a question for you about what the speed limit should be raised to. With side roads and drivers pulling out from driveway and such and thinking of the number of wrecks we have now can you give me a guess how many we would have.

We were passed a few weeks ago on 97, just south of Walnut Hill. Got on the phone with the Sheriff’s Dept. (911), finally caught upwith the car in Walnut Hil at the school because of traffic, Got tag number gave to 911 operator, no Deputy in the north end, followed to Atmore and call them and the police got them in Atmore. This car was doing over 100 miles an hour when they passed us and ran another car off the road, thank goodness for Atmore police and my husband following them and not giving up. Again taxes paid and no help from the local police.

Foe everyone wanting their own personal FHP officer to patrol this road…WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!! I live on a road the posted speed limit is 25 and people come thru doing 75 mph with the gas floored!!! FHP and ECSo just don’t really care…

As someone who travels 97 every day, I will say that one thing this road needs
is passing lanes… sure, it would be nice if all of us had all the time in the world to
follow you people who can putter down the road at 40- 50 miles an hour from Molino
to Atmore, but a lot of us have jobs to do and that road is just frustrating… I agree
that speeders are a problem but so are you slow drivers!!!! If they would put 2 lanes
in on parts of this road and up the speed limit but enforce it well, people would be
happier!!!!

I also live in Dogwood Park and the speeding is becoming worse and worse. You cannot drive the speed limit without someone passing you or riding your bumper no matter where you are, on curves, double lines wherever. We have asked the county to place some more highway patrol cars on the racetrack but we do not see them unless there has been an accident. If you are paying attention to Northescambia.com you will see there has been an increasing number of wrecks from 29 to Atmore. If someone who has the power to put more Florida Hwy Patrol on this road reads this then please do so for the safety of those of us who travel it everyday. They will not get bored.

The pick-up sounds like one that almost hit me on 97 two days ago at about the same time of day. The only thing I can add to this is that the one that almost hit me had a Ala. tag. He was in a big hurry and was trying to pass from the area of the school until we got to Crabtree by the water tower. South bound traffic was his problem and the rain. Hope someone knows the truck.

Glad these people are ok. We live near Dogwood Park on Hwy. 97 and travel this road every day. The speeders are ridiculous. My husband was doing the speed limit and was passed by a white Dodge Charger doing over 100mph which almost had a head on collision with another car. I pray for my husband’s and everyone else’s safety on this stretch of hwy. FL Hwy Patrol needs to sit on this road more often. People are ridiculous with the speeding.
