With the oppressive alimony laws that are in place, anybody with any assets is foolish to enter into a marriage, or civil union without a prenuptial agreement. Alimony should go down in the history books as a thing that used to be.

"Democrats skeptical about the proposal they say favors breadwinners" That is because Democrats are not in favor of hard working people keeping their own hard earned money. They prefer to create dependent people rather than encourage true independence.

Alimony should be entirely abolished as a form of slavery; the government should never take from one to give to another where there has been no injury and no contract explicitly to that effect.. People going into marriage should be required to understand that they are alone responsible for their future income.

My own daughter, I expect to take care of herself.

I can only pray this law goes through for both genders and for the sake of greater peace with families. With guidelines we will see more divorce cases settled in mediation, taking up less court time, saving both sides litigation cost, and reducing stress, bitterness etc, that simply hurts everyone. The "guidelines pulled out of thin air" comment by Rep Berman, angers me. I am certain there was quite a bit of give and take debate from both sides coming to a resonable compromise. What I don't understand is the Bill that passed two years ago by a super majority in both the house and senate, and then vetoed at the last minute by our Governor, because of the "retrocactive" clause. Clearly this was political, what is fair and reasonable for divorces after 10/15 should be fair and reasonable for all. My case has methodically put me in the poor house, I am a former husband and good father that is an indentured servant , who will most likely never have the ability to retire. I don't believe the opponents of this Bill fully realize how adversly current alimony law affects many alimony payers, nor the strife and bitterness that causes a family to be further divided. Yes I pray for this Bill to go through , no one should go through what I have and many good friends I know.

It would be most beneficial for seniors in high school to be educated (mandatorily) about the long-term financial ramifications of marriage/unions ...they need a reality check EARLY on...it would probably save them from a whole lot of stress down the road -if they listen! Although I've been divorced twice, alimony was never even discussed.... Why? Because, as a female, I was smart enough to get a solid, well paying career under my belt early on..it would behoove girls to think along that line as well...marriage is not a fairytale...better to make your own safety net .

It's amazing the National Organization for Women has such a dated and stereotypical view of women. I have to think the women who stay at home, have no education, and develop no job skills has to be a small percentage.

Maybe she meant to say that women are bright and capable. They may need temporary assistance while they complete an education and transition into the workforce, but don't need to be dependent on a man forever.
