No legitimate agency, government included, will call you and demand payment without FIRST sending it to you in writing and giving you 30 days to dispute it. Don't allow even legitimate collection agencies to violate the law! Tell them you will not send them anything based on a phone call. You need written documentation so that you can verify that you owe the debt, then you will call and take care of it. If they are legitimate, they will do this with no issue. If they won't, they're scammers! Hang up. A word of caution - some tribal loan companies will have collectors call you - you should still insist on written documentation before moving forward.
