Just FYI: I had a generator and access to my landline, also my dialup internet which is very slow. The cell phones in this area DID NOT work, neither did the internet. I also happen to have a battery on my laptop which works when there is no power. But many people do not have a landline anymore, so no internet or cell service. I also have an emergency radio.

To Jane: The phone company uses a back-up generator which runs the equipment to produce "Battery for you Phone Lines". There for if you have a DSL with your phone company then you have internet. Hopefully you have a back-up generator for your home. if not, your PC is not going to work. Most Cell Towers have back up power, the only issue would be if a tower is taken down.

>>Here is a thought: if you have no power you have no internet. So please tell me how this is helpful after a hurricane or power grid failure?

It's internet based in that is (probably) "in the cloud" elsewhere in the country. Then the internet based system makes the automated telephone calls out. Much like the automated calls you receive from the school system if you happen to have a child in school. It won't matter one bit if the internet is working for you or not....you'll get a phone call.

Here is a thought: if you have no power you have no internet. So please tell me how this is helpful after a hurricane or power grid failure? After hurricane Ivan we were without power for over 2 weeks and some even longer. The landline worked, (and the old plug in the wall phone worked) which is why I kept it. My cell phone had no connection and most people had no internet. So how is this helpful?
