All the comments about people aside-- the market bears what the consumer will pay.

Isn't that the recurring mantra we hear ad nauseam about why capitalism is so great?

You can all have your opinion about the state of mind of someone who would pay this kind of money for a pet, but you are not that individual, are you? Maybe someone thinks you are foolish for paying $2000 for a gun, or whatever it is that cranks your tractor.

That said--we only adopt animals slated for execution because people are crappy and don't take the responsibility of owning a pet seriously. Some of the seniors we have had were worth way more than $4000 to us for reasons important to us.

Vanity could be the only thing that drives someone to spend $4,000 on an animal that they cannot use for transportation or eat.
"Hey Look at ME because I have a $4,000 mutt."
Kind of like a new reality show, Honey Duh-Duh.
Anyone considering such a purchase may be better off using the $4K to get some counseling services.

Do hope dog is okay but sure doesn't look like $4,000 to me....maybe $18.37 if it comes with a year's free food and vet services.

Agree with NWFLA Linda and believe in adopting critters rather than buying from the box stores. "Papers" on a dog are usually worth the paper they are written on.

That puppy is only a $4000 puppy at a retailer such as Petland, Petsmart etc.
The same could be had direct from a breeder that only breeds one breed for $400.
The puppy mill industry, supported by retailers such as named above are wowfully unregulated.

Does not seem the shoplifter would be hard to locate with so many markings. Hope someone is monitoring Craigslist and other venues for puppy sales. As for folks paying $4,000 for a puppy, this baby is likely the product of a puppy mill and that's what puppy mills and retailers who support them do - they charge huge amounts of money. The mills mass produce "purebred" puppies to appeal to the naieve public who simply must have some sort of purebred dog regardless the price. The price is much more significant than dollars spent, though. It's paid with the lives and well being of the mother dogs who are bred relentlessly, kept in squalid conditions, and when they can no longer produce, are discarded or killed. There will be those who dispute this (I can hear them now!) but I'd ask them to please do some research first. People involved with dog rescue do not say "Adopt Don't Shop" without good reason. There are plenty of dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and bloodlines dying every single day in animal facilities around the country. I hope this little sweetie is found and if the person who stole it did so to make it their own, then I would hope the risk taken makes for a good home.

looks like a Chinese pug to me...too much money for a puppy ...But a thief is a thief and if you have to steal a puppy you probably aren't a good person to own an animal anyway.

I don't believe SHE was thinking about buying the dog when she went in there and as far as price tags... many would pay the price if their budget could allow it. The dog is worth money, the thief either wanted it for herself or knows someone who may have some cash to buy it from her. Who is to say at this point. The poor dog is gone and I hope it is taken care of with love.

Who in the world would buy a $4,000 dog?!?!? Maybe the authorities should question the price of that dog. The person that took it was helping somebody not waste money on something such as a dog.
