Granddaughter planted pack of Sunflower seeds and watered, weeded, tended to them and got all excited when they first peeked out of the soil. She kept at it and a few of them grew tall as she is then were higher than her head. We all awaited the day the buds would pop and a beautiful flower would emerge. Photos were taken on that day and lots of celebration. Coming home from school she dropped the backpack of books and ran out into the backdoor just in time to see a squirrel streak away from her now broken down and partly eaten flowers. Her effort and care lay on the ground as if the air had been let out of them. She turned around and smiled and said, "Hey, squirrels gotta eat too". Made me laugh and very proud of her, as always.
