Walmart: If you shop there you will see that they do indeed need more help. The long lines are ridiculous. With the profits they make they should pay their workers more.

Job Search: I’ve found that it is easier to find a job when already employed. With that said, swallow your pride and fill out an application at McDonald’s or Dollar General. You are hurting yourself in the long run by not doing anything. I know it’s hard because I have been there before. I actually worked retail along with receiving unemployment benefits when I was laid off years ago. Then I found one job that paid for everything. Keep your head up! Also register at all employment agencies.

Greed is not the answer and some have too much money, therefore they should spend their money creating make-work jobs for us? Like greeters? The question comes to mind: Who is being greedy, the one wanting power over others’ property or the ones wanting freedom to decide for themselves? I guess part of the answer lies in observing who has helped the most people.

David maybe my point was not clear to you or you are better at expressing your argument. Walmart heirs and family members in that organization have loads of money. Maybe they earned it by working hard to develop their business. But they and many other businesses owners have far too much money they could ever use when the disadvantaged and poor do without. You know the 1% out there. Socialism is not a bad idea. I can’t argue with you so I won’t. Just know we both have differing opinions on this subject. Real people are hurting and need work and healthcare. Corporations have huge huge profits. We and we have an obligation to help others. Greed is not the answer unless you have no concern for the economically and socially disadvantaged in our county state country and world.

That’s funny, my husband works 2 jobs, but yet nobody can locate 1 job, either your not looking hard enough or it’s not enough pay & you deserve more, so they think. @ me, go put in for Dept. of Corrections, they’re all the time needing people, unless its not for you, I know a person without a job one time, had a wife & kid to support, without ins., lived not too far from a prison, but naw, he said I just don’t think I could work there, not enough money, really I thought @ this time you have none, well except for what people gave em, that’s the problem, they want someone to give, they really don’t want to work, why work their butt when they can just sit back & let people feel sorry for them, we’ll, I never gave anything, if you don’t want to help yourself, don’t expect me to give

CONSIDERING:
“unemployment rate jumped from 6.5 percent in June to 6.9 percent in July …One year ago, unemployment in Escambia County was 7.5 percent.”

Down from last year, up from last month.
So it is good news or bad news depending on point of comparison.

So you believe they should hire more workers than they need, provide extra benefits just because someone else SHOULD be doing it and forget about the people who invested in the corporations, minimize profits to the folks who are depending on dividends to pay their retirement expenses and risk going out of business (and thereby laying off ALL workers) for social justice?

Why don’t you just throw your business to the ones who DO hire people they don’t need, pay them more than others doing the same thing, and forget the shareholders? Why don’t you invest in those corporations even though they don’t pay you back for your investment and may go broke soon?

It really saddens me that large corporations (e.g. Walmart and many others) continue to make record profits for shareholders but can’t or don’t or won’t pay a decent wage or hire more employees. Higher wages and better benefits. We all can’t land a great paying job these days and with our depressed economy I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Real hard working people are hurting out there. Spreading economic wealth wouldn’t be a bad thing in my view.

This line speaks volumes:
“The jobless numbers released by Florida and Alabama do not include persons that have given up on finding a job and are no longer reported as unemployed.”

Our area of Florida / the World needs something more than minimum wage, part-time, short-term jobs yet there seems to be great resistance to bringing in any sort of industry or manufacturing to help our pool of citizens employed.

I have a friend whose question to all is, “How many paychecks are YOU away from being homeless?”

@ me…..Best hopes for you all who are looking for work.

Not so sympathetic with the group who feels entitled to their government handouts and have never worked….sometimes several generations of families being on the backs of the workers.

I am currently unemployed and have been looking for a job for about 2 months now. I have interviewed 3 times for a job last week and still heard nothing. 3 INTERVIEWS!! and still nothing. Most stuff I apply to seems like it may be a scam because I never hear nothing back. It is super tough to find employment these days.
