Fred, I agree with you. We also need to look at feeding children who come to school hungry.

@ Fred
No disagreement....if there is really a "surplus" then why not use it for the things you mentioned plus the other daily needs of kids in schools?
Scott, a couple of years ago cut the education budget in order to "balance" the budget and that hurt kids.
Scott, recently added back a portion of the money he had previously cut from the education budget and lauded himself as being interested in education.
Never understood why education is the hinge point for politics but it sure seems to be that way.
The most unfortunate thing is that it seems we have two choices in the governor race, Scott or Crist.....sure wish there would be a better option come forward.

I know I'm going to catch a lot of criticism for saying this, but I think the sales tax holiday is inappropriate. The back to school sales tax is supposed to help families of school children, but I know a lot of teachers who pay for classroom supplies out of their pockets, because there is no budget for necessary items. If there is such a surplus, then provide an adequate budget for everything the schools need (and I mean paper, bulletin board supplies, even toilet paper for special needs classes where the teacher aides have to help the children with toileting). Teachers pay for this stuff out of their salaries, with no reimbursement, so let's fix that before the governor starts pandering with sales tax holidays.
Okay, I said it, I'm prepared for the criticism, but I stand by my opinion.

Florida has "...a budget surplus of about $1 billion..." so to reduce that surplus the governor is proposing to cut the sales tax on Back to School items for 10 days.
That is good and welcomed by most anyone with school aged kids, or wanting to refresh their own adult clothing supply at home. But, what happens when that surplus is depleted? Why just tax the people more is the answer.

Keep hearing how there is not money for roads, infrastructure, police, fire, EMS and the list goes on and on. How about using some of the surplus to fill in the gaps for needed services?

Of course, the opening sentence of this article told the whole intent "...as part of his re-election year proposal to cut taxes and fees by $500 million."

It'll be interesting to see how many legislators up for re-election jump onto Scott's bandwagon then whine about why they cannot provide services to taxpayers.
