I have always noticed that the deer are almost always at a bridge or where water is. they are likely to appear anywhere, but sometimes when you are approaching a bridge or if there are deep ditches that hold water, just be on watch at all times. especially at dusk. of course, they can come out anytime. it is so hard to know what to do at the last moment. and the deer can come out so quick, it is difficult to avoid. but hitting the ditch was awful scary for this family...glad they are going to be okay

@ Tina:
"It is better to hit the deer and get some car damage than swerve and risk rolling the car and injuring or killing your family. NEVER SWERVE, YOU WILL ONLY HURT YOURSELF AND YOUR PASSENGERS, WHILE THE DEER RUN AWAY."

Would not recommend this tactic on a Cow or Horse standing in the middle of the road, which I have witnessed more than once.

My husband, his brother and his brother's wife happened upon the accident right after it occurred. We helped pull one of the little girls out of the cart and kept them warn and still until the emergency crew arrived. I think the girls were shaken up, but aside from a couple of small cuts, they were ok. The grandma hit the airbag pretty hard, though. Think she had some head injuries and maybe some neck and back ones, too.

Our lifelong training in driving makes us try to stop instead of hitting something. By the time you think it through, we've already hit the brakes. Being a motorcycle rider, I'm even more apt to do so. I'm curious how it's going to work out with the new cars that will have the automatic braking system. Just seems weird to me. Just glad these people were basically ok and nothing worse happened.

I've known several people who didn't swerve, hit the deer, and DIED!!! At least if you swerve to avoid it (which is called defensive driving, btw), there's a chance that everything will work out find. If you hit the deer, everything is NOT fine!

Most the time hitting the deer can cause more damage than actually swerving. It is a 50/50 chance as to what will actually happen. Swerving or hitting can both cause serious injuries, deaths, more car damage. I have seen both occur. So there is not right or wrong how to handle this situation. Everyone has their own opinion on it though.

@Chris
Yeh people react differently... in this case the reaction was wrong. Tina has it right. NEVER risk your life over an animal. I've seen the same reaction over a squirrel... a squirrel. I don't care what it is...a dog,cat,squirrel, deer...avoiding them is asking for trouble... just like the story above. I'm glad everyone made it out OK.

Well Tina take a look at it this way....some people react a lot different than others....they get scared a lot easier....its not a matter of avoiding things to prevent a vehicle from getting damaged....she just reacts different. Just be happy that no one was SEVERELY INJURED in this accident.
