I went to school on a year round schdule when I was in middle school, and I really liked it. The same schedule was voted on here several years ago, and the community did not want it. So, unless things have changed drastically, I doubt it would pass a vote now.

truancy? why not just go to a year around schedule? why is there a three month summer break? are the kids actually working the fields?

As a homeschool parent I don’t mind when people ASK me or my children if today is a school off day or something. I do however get frustrated when people look to my children and say “Shouldn’t you be in school today?”. For us everyday is a school day and the “regular” student vacation day is sometimes just another school day for us. I know many don’t understand the homeschool/virtual school mentality but people need to remember the old brick school is NOT the only way to be educated anymore. My children do the same type lessons as regular students but because they don’t have to compete with 20 other students they are done in 1/3 of the time.

try homeschooling… we can turn anything into a field trip…. homeschooling has its advantages!!! our kids dont have to ’skip school” to have a free day…

Many kids get away with truancy because there is an underlying assumption that they are in some sort of other educational program, such as alternative schools or home school settings, so they aren’t challenged. For my part, I always called parents when kids weren’t in school, or if I knew they were “skipping” (there were many students willing to tell on them), I would write a disciplinary referral so it could be handled through proper channels. Then, I called the parents!

I remember ditching school a few times in the 60’s,we were so afraid of the truant officer that if we hear a car driving by we would hide in the bushes till it past lol,nowadays kids routinely parade the streets and I think “why are these kid’s not in school today? and figure it to be a typical day or some type of break…..
