Nah, phonics is good even if we joke about it. Teaching people to spell based on sounds would include ph for the “f” sound so people learning via phonics wouldn’t call it foniks, it’s all part of the joke.

To be honest, though, many people aren’t bothering to learn to spell either because they don’t care or because their phones and computers are smart enough to clean up behind them.

Phonics has been taught for years, since the 1970’s, and actually makes spelling easier. This is just another sad commentary on the fall of our civilization.
