I think very highly of Mr. Thomas, as do my teacher friends and family. He is an honest, good, fair man and loves the kids of Escambia County. Talk to the state about the heavy emphasis on FCAT – Mr. Thomas is looking after the kids (fail the test, fail the grade) by pushing FCAT teaching as well as the teachers (your kids fail FCAT you get a lower or no raise).

Untrue. He has the EXACT same credentials that I do. He was re-elected because he can do the job and do it well.

Nurses are not under the school district – they are under either the county health service or the Public Health Service. They are always quick to let you know that they are not “school district” employees. Therefore, Mr. Thomas is not the one who pulled them out of the schools.

Mr. Thomas is not responsible for NCLB or the high stakes FCAT test, but he is tasked with making sure those laws are followed and the students prepared to take the FCAT. If you want to blame him for something, pick an issue where he actually has a choice in the outcome! You’re just looking for things to throw at him.

Mr. Thomas has a thankless job. Many of you commenting on this blog have NO IDEA the laws, buracracy and minute details that the superintendent must follow, whether he likes it or not. I was a teacher in the Escambia system for 14 years before I took employment elsewhere, but I am still teaching! I am sincerely glad Mr. Thomas was re-elected – he is a good and fair (within his legal constraints) man and I think he’s done a wonderful job of running the district. I’m glad he’s in charge while my last child is finishing up public school.

There is a segment of the employee population that is NEVER happy with the superintendent, regardless of who he or she may be! Try to give Mr. Thomas a fair shake before believing everything these naysayers have to say.

He won because no one qualified ran against him. School district insurance benefits are the worst in the state. He took full time nurses out of schools. We now have “trained” teacher aides and secretaries handling medical emergencies and dispensing medications. We pre-test, practice test, county created test, etc. to the point that by the time a student takes the “real” test they are exhausted and over it. We give schools funding for technology, then don’t supply the training on how to efficiently use it or the funding to keep it maintained (bulbs, toner, etc.). We have taken local food vendors out of scools. Papa Johns can’t sell pizza during lunches, but the school cafeterias can make their own and sell it… apparently that is healthier? We attempt to meet class size regulations by putting 40 kids in a class and adding a “co-teacher”. Then stick 50 kids in a PE class. Like thats not a safety and supervision issue and that there is “no child left behind”.

Just like David Morgan and Wilson Robertson… he was re-elected because no one qualified for the position ran against him.

He lost a thrid of the vote to his challenger who essentially did not campaign. He must have spend a good amount of change too. So, when is he going to sell all those vacant schools and buy the kids some new books?… Thats his job right? or is it real estate mogul?
