People, the President of the United States is NOT that powerful. He doesn't control every aspect of our government. Despite having our system of checks and balances, the Legislative Branch is the most powerful -- the 535 men and women who work in the funny shaped building on Capitol Hill are the ones who propose and pass the laws by which we live. Even more importantly, they are the folks who control the government's money -- they create ways to generate funding (taxes) and determine how the money should be spent.
